Telen

Telen is an elegantly-built procedural constructed language. Its lexicon is formed entirely from processing English words through a conversion algorithm. This concept is inspired by the Al Bhed language from Final Fantasy X, which follows the same concept while using a much simpler algorithm (with far inferior results).

Word conversion follows an in-depth procedure, returning a converted word from the input English. First, it's determined if the word should be transliterated or translatedproper nouns, loanwords, and the like should always be transliterated, while all other words should be translated. The orthography and phonology sections below provide enough information to transliterate just about any English word, while the translation algorithm is far too detailed to include here.

Dictionaries for English–Telen and Telen–English, each with over 140 000 entries, can be found below.

Special thanks go to the following multinational list of linguists without whose counsel Telen would not be what it is today:

Orthography

The standard Telen alphabet contains eighteen letters, with twelve consonants and six vowels. The extended alphabet adds a thirteenth consonant for labial plosives (not included in native phonology), as well as variations of existing letters that include diacritics—see the phonology section below.

Phonology

Telen phonology uses a simple letter-for-letter phonology to represent native phonemes. It also 'borrows' non-native phonemes for use in proper names and loanwords, and typically represents these using native letters with diacritics.

Telen has six single-consonant-only words: n (not), k (of/about), l (the), s (to), x (at), and f (for). When pronounced, a shortened mid-vowel /ə/ is epenthesized for articulation purposes, however this feature is elided before a word beginning with a vowel. For example, compare the phrase "of steel", "k nixyr" (/kə ˈnɪʃir/), with the phrase "for you", "f ye" (/ˈfiɛ/, rather than /fə ˈiɛ/).

Sample Text

Example
As the pen fell far to the floor, Amy watched it hit the tile. She knew she couldn't have caught that pen if Brian threw it to her from his greasy old hands. But she picked it up and wrote the directions to her house. She cleared her throat, but her words still sounded hoarse.

“This is the best route. Keep your horse to this path, and you'll be fine. After you cross the creek, be careful of the large roots that come up out of the ground. We'll have a cot set up in the guest house for you.”

Amy handed the pen back to Brian. She wanted to wash her hands immediately, but settled on wiping them on her jeans. The look on Brian's face when she did this sent a pin-pricking sensation through her. She knew she shouldn't be so hard on him. After all, she thought, he is my brother. I shouldn't be so angry all the time. And he is doing us a great service by helping us out this summer.

“Thanks again, Brian. I'll see you in the morning. Travel safe!”

Brian nodded to his sister. He did not attempt to extend his calloused, dirty hand to her. But he smiled, knowing that at least she had begun to trust him again. Could it last?
